Overview
For decades, many British families have viewed property as the ultimate wealth-building asset. Homes bought for a few thousand pounds have grown into assets worth hundreds of thousands, and in some cases millions, creating an expectation that future generations will inherit significant wealth.
But the reality of accessing that wealth can be much more complicated.
And changes to inheritance tax are set to bring this challenge into sharper focus. From April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be brought within the value of an estate for inheritance tax purposes. This could leave more families facing an IHT liability, and increase the tax bill for some estates that are already liable.
Probate delays, inheritance tax, estate costs, a slower property market and multiple beneficiaries can all delay or reduce access to an inheritance. Someone may be due to receive a substantial sum, while still facing an immediate need for cash months, or sometimes longer, before the estate is settled.
For IFAs, brokers, solicitors and probate professionals, this creates an increasingly important client conversation.
Join Provira and our panel of experts as we explore how the inheritance landscape is changing, where liquidity problems can arise and how professionals can identify clients who may need support earlier in the process.
We’ll also look at the role inheritance and estate advances can play, and the practical considerations advisers should understand when discussing the options available to their clients.
What you’ll learn
- Why significant inherited wealth can still leave beneficiaries facing short-term cash-flow pressures
- How probate delays, estate costs and upcoming IHT changes, including the inclusion of most unused pension funds from April 2027, could affect beneficiaries and the liquidity available within an estate
- What a slower property market can mean for estates reliant on the sale of a home
- When inheritance or estate advances may be appropriate
- How advisers, brokers and solicitors can identify potential liquidity needs earlier
- Why inheritance liquidity should become a more proactive part of conversations with clients and their families
- Why rising or unexpected IHT liabilities could leave more estates needing access to funds before assets can be distributed
